Gol D. Roger (ゴール・D・ロジャー Gōru Dī Rojā?), later more commonly referred to as Gold Roger (ゴールド・ロジャー Gōrudo Rojā?),[ch. 154] is the captain of the Roger Pirates.[ch. ?] Roger gains worldwide infamy and is eventually called the King of the Pirates (海賊王 Kaizoku-Ō?).[ch. 1] Suffering from an incurable disease, he decides to make a complete voyage through the Grand Line with his crew. Afterward, he disbands the crew and turns himself over to the World Government, who announce that they have captured him.[ch. 506] At his execution, 22 years before the beginning of the series,[ch. 506] Roger announces that he left his treasures in the Grand Line, including the One Piece, and that it is up for the taking.[ch. 1] This spawned the "Great Pirate Era", with various pirates looking to become the King of the Pirates, by finding the treasure referred to as the "One Piece".[ch. 506] He can listen to "the voice of all things", allowing him to read the Poneglyphs.[ch. 507] He is the father of Portgas D. Ace.[ch. 550] He is voiced by Chikao Ōtsuka.[2] In the 4Kids adaptation, Roger is voiced by Greg Carey.[3] In the Funimation English adaptation, his voice is supplied by Sean Hennigan.
